Button Boxes |

There was a time when buttons were a precious item. When clothes had served their pupose and were ready to be turned into rags the buttons were cut off and saved. Often long strips of linen were covered with row upon row of cut off and saved buttons. Young maidens vied to have the best button collection and parties were often held to swap buttons. The Shaker button box was designed to hold, well buttons. I suspect not loose buttons but buttons sewn on strips of cloth. Pictured to the left is the button collection of Laura Rosburg Kouba (1887 - 1971) in our cherry button box with birds eye maple top. We have recently added our #5 size button box to our offerings. This size is smaller and is, obviously, less expensive. But it also returns to the classic style of single swallowtail fingers on the top and bottom bands with the fingers pointing in opposite directions. Our Shaker reproduction and Shaker inspired products are made in the traditional manner. Each item is individually crafted and no two are ever exactly alike. The swallowtails are held together with copper tacks made on a machine that was making tacks over 100 years ago. Our finishing process is described in our article Shaker Wood Finishes . But before you purchase, please read our Philosophy on Milk Painting and check out our Milk Paint Colors .
